Harmony School District’s Salmon Creek Falls Environmental Center has been certified LEED platinum by the U.S. Green Building Center. It is the first LEED platinum certified building in Sonoma County.

The building is on the campus of the Salmon Creek Charter, Harmony Elementary and Pathways Charter schools on Bohemian Highway.

I did a story about the project and the building back in April. Read it here http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20090404/ARTICLES/904049994

The certification process takes months and projects are rated on how the rooms are heated and cooled, where the building sits in proximity to sun and shade, where building materials were derived and what kind of products cover the floors and line the walls.

Other buildings in Sonoma County have been LEED-certified but platinum is the highest level of certification issued by the Green Building Council. Chartwell School in Seaside became the first school in California to earn platinum status in 2008.

Construction on the project began in  2007 and students celebrated its grand opening last April.

The building features cafeteria tables constructed of recycled materials, wall surfaces made of recycled cork, low-flow water fixtures, solar panels and a living roof.

Backers said $3.6 million in grants and donations were committed to the project, including $1.2 million from the Coastal Conservancy.

Persinger Architects and Associates of Sebastopol was the head architectural firm on the project.
