The Santa Rosa School Board finalized $5.6 million in cuts to next school year’s $88 million budget but members warned that the entire list of line item cuts will be revisited – in as early as May when the state revised budget is released.

“I’m open to more cuts at the district office, as painful as it is,” said trustee Tad Wakefield. “Counselors, librarians, elementary prep periods – all of those will be revisited.”

Board member Wally Lowry said class sizes and even school closures have to be considered.

Board member Larry Haenel said school closures have to be examined when considering the magnitude of the compounded cuts.

“It doesn’t look good, it doesn’t look pretty,” he said.

“What we are faced with is unbelievable,” said board president Bill Carle.

The board on Wednesday night sealed the decision to cut three days from the upcoming school year, saving the district about $1.3 million.

Carle said he did not know which days will be cut but he wanted to target times that were least disruptive to student learning.

He nixed the notion of picking more high profile days that might draw the attention of the general public to school funding woes.

“I don’t buy into the notion of getting people’s attention,” he said. “I don’t think we are cutting days to get people’s attention. I don’t believe it’s our responsibility to tell people to wake up.”
