Longtime school board member Frank Pugh said this race made him more anxious than any other. And as a 20-year school board vet, that is saying something.

“This election worried me more than any election I’ve ever had,” he said, pointing to national headlines that indicate what he called “this big overthrow” of incumbents.

Coming off a year of deep cuts to programs, the calendar and arts and music spending, Pugh said voters could have come out swinging for the local incumbents.

But he and a fellow veteran Bill Carle appeared headed to a solid victory late Tuesday.

“I’m so relieved that the public still continues to support our board in these very difficult times,” he said from an election night party he hosted at his home.

Fellow incumbent Wally Lowry, first elected eight years ago, was having a tougher night Tuesday. Lowry was running fourth to Ron Kristof, a retired school teacher who won the teacher’s union endorsement.
