The Santa Rosa School Board on Wednesday night approved a renewal of the annual agreement with local Little League officials to use Monroe Elementary school for baseball.

The arrangement has irked neighbors for years, especially David Lewis, who lives adjacent to the ballfields and has repeatedly complained about early morning noise, rude parents, incessant traffic and dust.

“My family has paid an emotional price, a professional price,” for standing up to what Lewis described as the Little League’s bully tactics.

“With the support that this board has given the Little League, they can do pretty much whatever they want,” he said.

A recent slate of findings by the Sonoma County grand jury have been addressed by the district, officials said.

“We are kind of about there on balance, in terms of balancing the interests of all concerned,” said Associate Superintendent Doug Bower. “There are always issues and we always deal with them but on balance, there is no significant change” from the current year’s agreement.

Board  members praised league officials for making strides to educate parents and fans about acceptable behavior, and determined the district does not have the power to fine individuals — only to revoke any agreement with the league as a whole. And league officials have made it clear that they want to continue to use Monroe’s fields so will work hard to keep scofflaws in check, they said.

“Adults have it totally within their control to blow it for the kids,” said Board President Bill Carle.
