UPDATE: New news from Windsor. Just got a note from Coach St. Amant, who informs ExtraCredit that senior team captains Jakob Christensen and Amy Jeffrey qualified for the California State Finals April 15-17 in San Diego. The pair earned their spot by posting a 4-0 record last weekend at a qualifying tournament held at Lowell High School in San Francisco.

The Windsor High School debate team finished second at the MLK Invitational Tournament at James Logan High School in Union City earlier this month.

More than 60 schools from across the state took part in the three day tournament Jan. 14-16.

Windsor’s top team of Jason Fauss and Jonathan Jeffrey advanced the furthest into the parliamentary portion of the competition, falling 2-1 in the championship round to a team from Sacramento’s Mira Loma High School. That pairing is now ranked fifth overall in California.

The team of Chuck Roady and Adam Ahrens tied for ninth place, while the teams of Jakob Christensen and Amy Jeffrey tied with Peter Jeffrey and Mariah Steiger as well as Mason Holt and Ivy Ziedrich for 17th place.

In the public forum portion of the competition, the team of Cameron Lane and Patrick Foster earned a 3-2 record. Sophomore Ivy Ziedrich finished fifth in the individual rankings for parliamentary debate.

“Our primary goal is to teach public speaking and critical thinking about current events, but winning is great,” Windsor coach Bryan St. Amant said in a statement. “Success at this high level gives our students confidence and motivation to keep learning and winning this season. I’m glad to see their hard work is being rewarded.”

The team’s next competition is at Dougherty Valley High School in Danville on Saturday where they will compete for the league championship.
