Burbank Elementary School students celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a school-wide poetry reading event in which students in grades first through sixth recited poems in front of their classmates and teachers.

The speech meet required students to memorize their poems and recite them for a panel of judges. The emphasis was on literacy based on rhythmic patterns of language, sentence structure, word choice and imagery, according to organizers.

All participants earned ribbons and first and second place ribbons were awarded to top students.

The event was sponsored by Santa Rosa Chapter Epsilon Beta of Delta Kappa Gamma’s International Society for Key Women Educators.
