The communities of Cardinal Newman and Ursuline high schools will celebrate the completion of a portion of a mural project that has seen the installation of four large pieces on the walls of the Redwood Gospel Mission shelter for homeless men.

A celebration of the work is scheduled for 1 p.m. June 6 at the facility, 101 6th Street in downtown Santa Rosa.

The pieces have been years in the making.

Spearheaded by Newman’s community based service learning coordinator for freshmen, sophomores and juniors, Anne Del Monte, the project has pulled in more than 30 student painters from Ursuline and Newman.

Ursuline art teacher Monica Bryant joined in the project and the team tapped architect Seong Brown and muralist Lisa Skelly to help.

Participating students went to Porziuncula, St. Mary’s and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco in 2009. Upon their return, students designed the murals.

Students began painting in 2010.

On May 26, four completed murals were installed at the shelter.
