Check out this rather scathing critique of professional development programs for teachers. Of course, budget cuts have largely wiped out professional development days and opportunities, but according to this blogger, they were a big waste of time anyway. Have a read:

    I don’t think its best to use someone who cites racerace as a reason for differences in academic achievement as a reliable source of anything — just my two cents!

    I have been teaching for 10 years and I believe that GOOD professional development is central to our profession. Through professional development we are able to keep up with the latest research, theories, and strategies. I spend my off time reading professional books and seeking out these things for I believe that Teachers should be constantly learning and reevaluating their practices. Because I work in a smaller district, professional development is not offered. When I worked in the Bay Area it was offered through our district and I learned a great deal.
