Penngrove Elementary School posted the largest vote total across a two-state area in an annual contest hosted by Raley’s supermarket.

With prize money of $10,000, Penngrove officials plan to build a permanent shade structure over the school’s outdoor eating area. The construction is expected to take place this school year.

Penngrove pulled in 6,856 votes in the Raley’s Reach contest. Aspire University Charter School in Modesto came in second place with 2,419 votes.

In all, five schools in northern California and Nevada won a total of $50,000 – $10,000 per campus – when the votes were tallied.

More than 128 schools competed for the funds.
