Four students from Sonoma Academy have recently returned from a three- day Student Diversity Leadership Conference in Houston, according to the school.

MacLean Hartford, Lupita Alamilla, Noah Baughman and Jenna Powell are members of Sonoma Academy’s student leadership council. They will present what they learned to the entire student body, according to school officials.

The conference was hosted by the National Association of Independent Schools. Participants examine issues of social justice, develop communication skills, practice expression through the arts and learn networking strategies.

“We often approach people with some sort of preconceived notion about who they are, instead of giving them a chance to show us who they really are,” Hartford said in a s statement. “I learned that this is called ‘fear of difference,’ and can be the first step in the cycle of oppression.”
