Hillcrest Middle School is the home of the winners of both the elementary and junior high school Sonoma County spelling bees held earlier this week.
The county spelling bee includes fourth, fifth and sixth grade spellers in the elementary division and seventh, eighth and ninth graders in the junior high division. Hillcrest Middle in Sebastopol serves grades six, seven and eight.
Kira Kelley, a sixth grader at Hillcrest, won the elementary division by spelling oscillate and then scrupulous for the win. Twenty students participated in the contest and had to have won their school or regional contests to compete for the county crown.
Eighth grader Brian Hanaway won the junior high contest by spelling laryngitis correctly and then spelling anonymous for the win. Thirty-six students competed in the event.
The top two spellers in each competition are eligible to advance to the state competition for their grade level. The state elementary contest will be on April 26 in Stockton and the junior high championships are in San Rafael on May 3.
