UPDATE — An astute reader pointed out that an incorrect web site appeared in this item posted Wednesday. The correct site is listed below. Those forms are available beginning Thursday at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The … Read More »

Again, more creative thinking amid ongoing state budget woes. Petaluma-based architect and LEED-AP Pete Gang and Bruce Hammond, LEED-AP, both formerly with the SSU program, developed the new course in … Read More »

Here’s a novel idea: Ads on exams?

by admin

The California budget crisis and its ongoing impact on schools just got deeper, weirder and more surreal. Math teacher Tom Farber of Rancho Bernardo High School (north of San Diego) has apparently been selling ad space on the bottom of his quizzes, tests and final exams with the intent of using the money to buy classroom supplies. His pull for the fall semester? $455. Most of that came … Read More »

Is your kid on MySpace?

by admin

When school goes back into session in 2009, teachers and administrators will have more leeway in going after so-called cyber-bullies who use MySpace, Facebook (and similar social networking sites) or cell phones to bully students. A law authored by Assemblyman Ted Lieu, D-El Segundo, gives school officials the power to suspend or expel students for bullying by means of such electronic devices or pages. Cyber bullying has grown as Web-based social … Read More »

Flavio Farias: Student of the Month

by admin

Steer clear of Flavio Farias in a geography or spelling bee. The Luther Burbank Elementary School sixth grader is known as “The Crusher” for his competitive academic spirit, according to his fifth grade teacher, Guy Cottle. “…in academic and vocabulary competitions, he quickly gained the reputation among the students as someone who can perform best when the pressure is highest. Students would moan openly when they realized that Flavio was their … Read More »

An update on my post from Dec. 10: Students at Rancho Cotate High in Rohnert Park get to keep their canned food crown as they outpaced their rivals from Montgomery High in Santa Rosa in the annual two-campus canned food drive contest. Rancho students came up with 7,671 pounds of food, while Montgomery students chipped in 5,371. Only bragging rights were at stake, but more than 13,000 pounds of food for the … Read More »
