About 60 Santa Rosa City Schools and affiliated districts and agencies met Wednesday afternoon at Ridgway High School to get briefed by Dr. Mark Netherda, the county’s deputy public health officer, on swine flu and how schools should deal with it.

At the end of May, Rancho Cotate High’s award-winning concert band will be heading to Washington D.C. to perform on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial as part of the year-long celebration of the nation’s 16th president.
But they’ve got a busy month of fundraising ahead to generate the approximately $60,000 needed to send 49 students and six chaperones, including band director Tim Decker, back east.

The big decisions facing the Santa Rosa School Board regarding potential cuts to adult education, class size reduction and loss of school site funds is now scheduled for May 13, not May 6 as previously scheduled.

Santa Rosa High School’s woodshop program appears back in business just a week after the Santa Rosa School Board voted to shut the program down next year because of budget woes.
Cindy and Bill Gallaher of Santa Rosa have offered to give approximately $85,000 to the district to keep the program alive next year. The board appears ready and willing to accept the infusion of funds at its May 13 meeting.

State schools chief Jack O’Connell is strongly urging students, their parents, and school officials to download a free “Keep Our Schools Healthy” tool kit in multiple languages to help prevent the spread of germs and viruses.

On May 1 at 7 p.m. and May 2 at 6 p.m., the Lower Lake High School Music Department is presenting A Renaissance Affair. The show features pageantry, music, theater and food from the period, according to school officials.
Students have recreated a medieval castle in the school’s multipurpose room and will serve a meal of wassail cup, pottage, roasted turkey, sausage, string beans and sweets .
