I’m live at Sassarini Elementary School in Sonoma as the student council puts on a STAR prep-pep rally. The school will host an assembly Thursday night for parents to help them prepare their students for next week’s testing.

UPDATE: I have had a few inquiries about what it would cost to keep woodshop going at SRHS. Here is the info from district office: The approximate cost to fund all five classes is $82,500. The district is currently paying $33,000 for two periods of woodshop and the county ROP program is picking up the tab for the other three. That ROP funding isn’t coming back next year and the …

Santa Rosa City Schools will lose 46 long time staffers to retirement this year. Added up, the number of years these folks have spent teaching, counseling and otherwise working in schools is about 960 years.

Patricia Crocker has been named Santa Rosa City Schools assistant superintendent for human resources for the 2009-10 school year. The board approved the hire on a 6-0 vote. Trustee Frank Pugh was not at the meeting.
Crocker, who has been doing consulting work for the district, will work and be compensated at 80 percent of full time levels. She will receive approximately $120,000 annually.

Henry Rollins, of Black Flag and Rollins Band fame, has been chosen at the 2009 Sonoma State University commencement speaker, according to campus officials.
Rollins will speak to graduates and their guests on the Rohnert Park campus at the two ceremonies on Saturday, May 23.
The Associated Students choose commencement speakers and are responsible for any applicable fees.

The California State PTA has backed four of the six propositions that will appear on the May 19 ballot. It came out against Prop. 1D and took no position on Prop.1F having to do with legislative pay increases. Jenny Diaz’s class of third and fourth graders at Coyote Valley Elementary School raised nearly $300 through their fund drive for Savethechildren.org. Students collected change over the course of three weeks, calling their effort “Project Newborn.” The United States Agency for International Development is quadrupling the gift, meaning the students can claim credit for more than $1,100 going to purchase basic medical supplies to clean and treat newborn babies.
