Montgomery’s Petersen wins top Poetry Out Loud prize

  Nelly Gudino Kennedy Petersen   Kennedy Petersen of Montgomery High School was the top vote getter in the Sonoma County Poetry Out Loud contest held this week. With the win, Petersen heads to the state competition in Sacramento Marcy 24-25. If she prevails there, Washington, D.C. is next April 28-30. Top of the tops Poetry Out Loud contest Feb. 10

Twelve Sonoma County high schools will be sending students to the countywide Poetry Out Loud competition Feb. 10. In the program, students memorize then recite poems. The pieces are not written by the students, but are typically considered greats in the English language. The participating schools include: Analy, Cloverdale, Creekside, El Molino, Elsie Allen, Maria Carrillo, Montgomery, Piner, Rancho Cotate, Roseland University Prep, Santa Rosa and Sonoma Academy. Carrillo’s Thigpen wins local Poetry Out Loud contest

Maria Carrillo High’s Brynna Thigpen earned a first place finish in the Sonoma County “California Poetry Out Loud” contest on Feb. 12. Thigpen, a junior, now advances to state finals in Sacramento on March 25 and 26. Students from 13 high schools in Sonoma County competed in the local competition, according to organizers. SRHS’s Hong wins local Poetry Out Loud contest

Santa Rosa High School junior Phebe Hong won the Sonoma County Poetry Out Loud competition this weekend and is expected to compete in the state competition in Sacramento on March 20 and 21. “The competitive field was very strong this year,” said Karin Demarest in a statement.
