Cardinal Newman announces transition team

Officials from Cardinal Newman High School have formed a transition team to help guide the 640-student school until a new president is named. Mike Truesdell, who for nine years acted as president of the Catholic high school, announced his resignation in May. The committee is being led by board of directors president Teejay Lowe. Cardinal Newman students earn multiple Spanish awards

Cardinal Newman High School students pulled in 11 medals and 10 honorable mentions in the most recent National Spanish Examination, according to Susye Weng-Reeder, chairwoman of the department of Modern & Classical Languages at the school. Glenn McKevitt also teaches some of the students honored. Newman’s Smith named to Fulbright exchange program

 Cardinal Newman teacher Ryan Smith will trade teaching assignments with a Hungarian instructor in 2012-13 as part of his being named to the Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange. Smith will teach in Budapest for one year, while Katalin Hubai will join the Newman campus. Smith is one of 76 U.S. and international teachers who will travel abroad for the upcoming school year through the exchange program, according to Fulbright. Math wiz Bailey honored by Johns Hopkins University

Cardinal Newman High School’s Kevin Bailey is at it again. The math wiz who earned headlines for his number-crunching ability last year, was chosen from more than 14,000 seventh and eighth graders who scored the highest on either the SAT or ACT. Bailey was honored for his scores on the math portion of the ACT, according to his mother, Julie Husar-Bailey of Santa Rosa. Newman names annual honorees, includes first woman

For the first time in its 47-year history, Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa is awarding the John Henry Newman Award to a woman. Patti Konicek Dietzen, Ursuline High class of 1974, and Dennis Crandall, teacher, coach and principal at Newman, will receive the annual award at a private President’s Reception on Dec. 7. Ursuline & Newman team unveils mural project

The communities of Cardinal Newman and Ursuline high schools will celebrate the completion of a portion of a mural project that has seen the installation of four large pieces on the walls of the Redwood Gospel Mission shelter for homeless men. A celebration of the work is scheduled for 1 p.m. June 6 at the facility, 101 6th Street in downtown Santa Rosa. The pieces have been years in the making. Newman, Ursuline hosting ‘Arts Alive’ fest

Cardinal Newman and Ursuline high schools will host “Arts Alive Festival” the first week of March. The focus will be pieces and works that touch an array of art mediums, including graphic design, photography, guitar, jazz ensemble, painting, film, video production, dance, poetry and drama. March 1 from 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. is the opening reception in Ursuline’s Brescia Hall. From 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. a “Red Carpet Film Festival” will be screened in Newman’s ACC building.
