SRCS trustees assigned graduation posts

Ceremony assignments are set to be formalized tonight for the string of Santa Rosa City Schools graduation festivities. For those interested, here is the lineup of which trustees will preside over which events. All graduations are on May 31 except for Mesa which is on May 30: Elsie Allen and Midrose, 5 p.m.: Laura Gonzalez. UPDATED: Santa Rosa School Board campus, committee assignments

UPDATE: A small change to the committee assignments below. Trustee Laura Gonzalez will not serve on the finance committee as previously noted. The change has been made below. ________ The Santa Rosa City School Board has made its new committee and campus liaison assignments. SR School Board splits vote on leadership posts

The Santa Rosa School Board elected its new lineup of office holders at the tail end of Wednesday night’s meeting, but the typically routine votes were split this time around. Trustee Frank Pugh nominated vice president Bill Carle for president, which was followed by a unanimous vote in support. For vice president, Pugh then nominated Donna Jeye, a move that was seconded by outgoing President Larry Haenel. The vote was unanimous. A little inside baseball news from the Santa Rosa School Board for anyone interested: new committee and school liaison assignments are being settled for the 2012 calendar year at the board’s regular meeting Wednesday night. The following assignments are proposed: President Larry Haenel: Teacher advisory committee (chair); Green Team Advisory Subcommittee. Haenel new president of Santa Rosa School Board

Larry Haenel was elected the new president of the Santa Rosa School Board after the seven member board conducted its annual re-organization vote Wednesday night. Haenel was chosen in a unanimous vote. Veteran trustee Bill Carle was elected vice president and Laura Gonzalez was voted in as clerk. Outgoing board president Frank Pugh was given a mounted gavel – his fifth “thank you for serving as president” plaque. Unusual split vote on routine post picks

An unusual note was struck at the conclusion of Wednesday night’s Santa Rosa school board meeting during the usually routine, end of year board re-organization item. It’s typical to re-assign board members to new posts at the conclusion of the year, what is a little less usual is the split vote that occurred for the vice president pick. While the Santa Rosa School Board on Wednesday night directed staff to move forward with checking out different proposals to initiate its almost year-old corporate sponsorship and naming rights policy, different opinions emerged on just how that should look in reality. Board president Bill Carle said he would not vote for any contract that pays the coordinating firm with a flat fee. Parent not convinced “Tortilla Curtain” belongs in class

Interest has been high in the debate over whether to keep T.C. Boyle’s “The Tortilla Curtain” on high school reading lists at Santa Rosa City Schools. The school board voted Wednesday 7-0 to maintain its policy of keeping the book available and limiting it to juniors and seniors while allowing students to opt out and read something else.
