Carrillo’s Rencken gets surprise visit from Raider

[imagebrowser id=41] Maria Carrillo High School senior Cami Rencken was surprised Thursday morning with a visit from Oakland Raider Brice Butler. Butler, a seventh round pick who just finished his rookie season in Oakland, was on campus to award Rencken a Bay Area All-Star Scholarship Team scholarship of $3,000. In addition to the Raiders, the 49ers, Oakland A’s, Golden State Warriors, Giants, San Jose Earthquakes and the San Jose Sharks all honor a college-bound senior who has displayed leadership in… Read More »

Know a super teen?

It’s my turn again and I’m looking for Teen Face profile nominations. Remember, students need not be perfect – just doing noteworthy things and deserving of some public kudos. An interesting, hardworking student with a story to tell is a great nominee. If you have a great idea for a profile, shoot me an email with your contact information and a bit about the student and what makes them stand out. Also, please include how to reach the student. Please… Read More »

Know an awesome teen worthy of a profile?

With the start of school on the horizon, the Press Democrat is looking for Teen Face profile nominations. Remember, students need not have earned straight As, been voted class president or named captain of the volleyball team (but if they are that’s OK, too). An interesting, hardworking student with a story to tell is a great nominee. If you have a great idea for a profile, shoot me an email with your contact information and a bit about the student and… Read More »

Thanks for all of the Teen Face nominations

Thanks to the loads of people who submitted nominations for the upcoming Teen Face profile. I received more nominations this round than I’ve ever had and the students who readers suggested sound terrific. I am keeping it under tight wraps who will be the subject of my upcoming profile but if it’s not your student, fear not. As promised, I have handed over all of the submissions to the editor of the Teen page so another reporter can hopefully take… Read More »

Teen Face: I’m taking suggestions

just a reminder: I’m on tap for an upcoming Teen Face profile. Like I did with the volunteer feature, I’m taking nominations/suggestions/requests for a great student to profile. Students need not be straight A, class presidents or captain of the volleyball team (but if they are that’s OK, too). An interesting, hardworking student with a story to tell is a great nominee. Think about it and shoot me a few paragraphs about your student (where they go to school, what… Read More »

More from Teen Face Michelle Stone

A Teen Face story I wrote on Ursuline senior Michelle Stone appeared over the weekend the Press Democrat. Read it here:http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20100418/LIFESTYLE/100419528 One interesting bit that didn’t fit into the story, Stone apparently took up pole vaulting as a sophomore after watching 1990’s low-budget-sci-fi-horror flick featuring Kevin Bacon. In one scene in “Tremors,” the three main characters are trapped on a cluster of rocks in the middle of the desert by a man-eating sand monsters called “graboids.” The three manage to escape… Read More »
