Schools of Hope recruiting new volunteers for spring

Is volunteering your time part of your list of New Year’s resolutions? If yes, there are opportunities galore in area schools. Schools of Hope, a literacy program run by the Volunteer Center of Sonoma County and the United Way of Wine Country, is looking for 145 new volunteers for the spring semester. Forum on Props. 30 and 38 scheduled

A panel discussion of propositions 30 and 38 hosted by the Sonoma County Office of Education and United Way of the Wine Country is scheduled for Oct. 4. The two propositions, one backed by Gov. Jerry Brown and the other by lawyer Molly Munger, would increase taxes to support public education. A story outlining a push to dramatically expand the Schools of Hope volunteer program in Sonoma County schools ran in today’s paper (read it here http://bit.ly/OBmgYH). The partnership of United Way of the Wine Country and the Volunteer Center of Sonoma County are hoping to recruit 500 new volunteers to the Schools of Hope program which asks for an hour commitment each week (30 minutes with a student and 30 minutes to account for travel, preparation time). The new school year is nearly upon us and that means the call for volunteers is going out from various groups who support area programs and classrooms. United Way holding book drive for Bookmobile

The United Way of the Wine Country is hold in a book drive in support of the Sonoma County Free Bookmobile. The drive will run from June 7-21. The goal is to collect 1,000 children’s and young adult books.
