Analy Waste AuditA story appeared in Wednesday’s Press Democrat about a waste audit conducted at Montgomery High School Tuesday morning through a program sponsored by the Climate Protection Campaign.

Analy High students did the same exercise this week and this is what they found out.

Total waste collected from inside classrooms and the cafeteria: 317 pounds.

Of that, 14 percent was recyclable, 32 percent was compostable, and 54 percent was real trash bound for the landfill.

The total staff and student population (about 1,700) is producing about .19 pounds of waste per day, according to the audit.

The weekly trash waste generated at Analy? About 1,585 pounds.

The purpose of the trash exam is to find a way to recycle, resuse and compost more on school campuses, according to the Climate Protection Campaign. Along with Analy and Montgomery, El Molino High won a $1,000 grant to conduct the audit and find alternatives to sending all of that waste to landfills every week.
