The students, parents and staff at Prestwood Elementary School in Sonoma dedicated the “Maloney Perfect Moment Garden” yesterday on campus.

Prestwood second grader Aiden Maloney; his sister, kindergartener Grace; and their parents, Susan and John Maloney, were killed Nov. 28, 2009, in a horrific car crash at the intersection of Lakeville Highway and Highway 37. They were returning from their Thanksgiving vacation when they were struck by another motorist.

While the school was working on a memorial to the Maloney family, another Prestwood student, first grader Anjalee Sanchez, was killed. The creators of the garden then included Anjalee in the memorial. Read about Anjalee here: http://bit.ly/976PRW

The garden features five concrete benches, each with a name on the front, according to its creators. The benches surround a patio which features mosaic made by the students’ classmates.

“It was truly a community effort to create this lasting tribute and peaceful space on campus,” said principal Beth Wolk, in a statement.

The committee consisted of Michael Meehan, Joelle Smith, Lisa Bell, Peter Clements, Canaan and Kevin Richards.

This from Meehan: “The Garden was designed and installed by Peter Clements Garden Design and Installation and Kevin Richards of Grassroots Lawncare, both parents at Prestwood Elementary.  The materials for the garden were donated by Sonoma Materials, the trees were donated by Sweet Lane Wholesale Nurseries in Petaluma, the bushes were donated by Village Nurseries in Sacramento, Jim Callahan donated his time in creating the plaques featured in the garden, and Walter Reis Concrete Pumping and Charles Webster contributed in the creation of the beautiful benches featured in the Garden.”
