Sonoma State University has named Carlos Ayala the interim dean of the School of Education.

He begins the job on Aug. 1.

Ayala will replace Mary Gendernalik-Cooper who is set to become the dean of the College of Education at the University of Mary Washington in Virginia.

Ayala has been with SSU since 2002 and is associate professor of curriculum studies and secondary education as well as director of assessment and accreditation, according to the school.

He is also the director of the science mathematics teacher recruitment initiative which aims to double the number of credentialed teachers in mathematics and science.

Ayala received his Ph.D. in curriculum and teacher education at Stanford, his M.A. in educational leadership and his California administrative services credential at San Diego State University, and his multiple subject bilingual teaching credential and single subject bilingual teaching credential in physical science and chemistry from U.C. Santa Cruz.
