It looks like middle school sports are returning to Cotati-Rohnert Park.

The cash-strapped district cut middle school sports in 2009 but Superintendent Barbara Vrankovich said “tremendous community support” has sparked their return.

The rollout will be incremental depending on financial support from the community. Fundraising is under way with an active parent group.

Track is first on the list and a boys and girls team will suit up for the newly renamed Lawrence E. Jones Middle School Jaguars this spring.

After that, a full lineup of sports is expected in the 2011-12 school year, if parent groups can raise the necessary funds.

“We don’t have the general fund school district money to support it,” Vrankovich said. “It’s a tremendous gift from the community.”
