Rancho Cotate’s boys basketball team brought in about $700 last weekend in a novel way – they shot free throws for money.

The Free-Throw-A-Thon was last weekend in the gym at the Ranch. Players asked for donations for up to $1 per free throw made and then shot 50 a piece. Forty players participated, according to varsity head coach Dennis Magatelli.

What makes this fundraiser noteworthy however, is that half of the money earned didn’t go to new uniforms or balls, but to the trust fund established for Cali Murray, the two-year-old girl struck and killed in a Rohnert Park crosswalk in December. Cali’s older brother, Corey, plays on the Cougars’ freshman squad.
