Guerneville Elementary School has earned the Title 1 Academic Achievement Award for 2010-11 from the California Department of Education.

In all, 209 schools were named to the list.

The Title 1 Academic Achievement Award is only given to schools receiving federal Title 1 funds to assist schools in meeting the educational needs of students living near or at the poverty level.

Of the more than 9,000 schools in California, more than 6,000 of them participate in the Title 1 program, according to the state department of education.

To meet the criteria for the distinction, the school must demonstrate that all students are making significant progress toward proficiency on California’s academic content standards. The school’s socioeconomically disadvantaged students must have doubled the achievement targets set for them for two consecutive years, according to the CDE.

The schools will be honored at a reception and banquet on May 20 in Anaheim.
