In celebration of Earth Day, the Green Team at Lawrence E. Jones Middle School in Rohnert Park continued its overhaul of five plots the students plan to fill with flowers, pumpkins, root vegetables, spring berries and other seasonally appropriate crops.

The project is a key part of the establishment of the school’s Green Team, a group of 13 students who have committed to maintaining a B average and are taking over coordination of the campus recycling program, according to organizers.

The team will work in pairs every lunch period, sorting bins and monitoring recycling stations to make sure paper, plastic and cardboard is properly sorted. Those same students will maintain the five, 8 by 10 feet plots on Keiser Avenue.

Eventually, crops could be incorporated into food services at the school, said Michelle Dunbar a food services employee in the district.
