Piner High School senior Emily Wood was honored Wednesday night for her commitment to the district’s Green Team Subcommittee.

While attending the regular meetings, Wood suggested that next year’s meetings be hosted by middle and high school environmental clubs so committee members can see the campuses up close and in action.

Wood founded Piner’s Environmental Club and helped sponsor the Alliance for Climate Education presentation last fall, according to school officials.

As president of the campus Key Club, Wood has helped organize several volunteer efforts, including a partnership with the Latino Club to sponsor the Dia De Los Muertos in the fall. Profits from the event went to help pay for arts education and extra-curricular activities for poor students in Uruguay.

Wood, a nominee for the annual Press Democrat Youth Service Award, expects to attend Humboldt State University in the fall to study environmental science. She hopes to continue her education at U.C. Davis where she would like to study wildlife biology.
