Eight elementary schools in Santa Rosa were given hundreds of books to support the CalSERVES after school program this week.

The celebration on Monday marked the end of the CalSERVES Read-A-Thon at Bellevue, Kawana, Meadowview, R.L. Stevens, Roseland, Sheppard, Taylor Mountain and Wright elementary schools.

Students from those campuses who participate in the CalSERVES after school program read more than 1,950 hours outside of school requirements between April 18 and May 4, according to organizers.

The program is an every-day, after school tutorial session during which students can get assistance with homework, get a healthy snack, complete physical exercise and tackle math and science projects.

CalSERVES participants are recommended based on teacher input and test scores, said Colleen O’Shea, assistant coordinator for volunteer infrastructure for the program.

About 80 students participated in the celebration Monday, during which Sonoma County Supervisor Efren Carrillo encouraged the students to keep their enthusiasm for reading.
