The Santa Rosa School Board has selected Maria Carrillo High School incoming senior Richard Liang to be the student representative on the board beginning July 1.

The board has included a student representative on the board since 1978. Schools are represented on a regular rotation. Student representatives are given a preferential vote on all items except those discussed in closed session. The student rep vote does not affect the final outcome.

Liang was Carrillo’s Boys State representative for 2011 and is the team captain of the school’s academic decathlon team. With his 4.9 grade point average, he is a three year member of the school’s Scholarship Federation.

Liang is also a member of the varsity swim team, a regular contributor to the Press Democrat’s Teen Page, is a member of the Kaiser Teen Advisory Committee and participated in the 2010-11 Tomorrow’s Leaders Today program.

Also on Wednesday, the board honored outgoing student representative Deanna Rafla-Yuan who graduates from Piner on Friday.
