Olson earned $500 for her finish.

Olson won the California competition in the junior paper division for her piece “The Camp David Accords: A Triumph of Diplomacy.”

Last year Olson, then a sixth grader at Santa Rosa Accelerated Charter School, won the “Outstanding State Project” for California for her documentary on artificial satellites.

About 1,000 elementary, middle and high school students took part in the state competition in San Jose earlier this month. The theme of the competition was “Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences.”

Nationwide, about 700,000 students participate annually.
